Question by emtmommyamanda: What is a nice place to raise a family near Austin, Texas?
My husband is almost done school and has applied for a job in Austin, Texas. We are from NJ and I am looking for a good surrounding town to move our family to. We have a 5 year old and one on the way. I haven’t heard good things about raising a family in the city and we are from a really small town and really don’t want to move to a big city.

Austin is a great place. The people are a friendly, charming and it is fun to be a part of a big college town and city. There is always something going on in Austin! As far as housing Austin is a very diverse city with and there are some great places to live in Austin. If you are looking for a good price with a decent size house I would check out the suburbs of Austin. Texas has recently been called recession proof and if you are looking for a job Texas is the place to be! Hope this helps!

You could try moving to Round Rock, Pflugerville, or Georgetown. They are nice suburbs but not too far away.

As usual, a mother’s instinct is right.

Austin city proper is really a college town and with attractions for the kids-turned-adult who want to live it up while being away from mom and dad. The city is not a good place for small children. There is a high crime rate which Austin has never been able to get a good handle on since the city expanded in the ’90s, and traffic is just plain bad.

The school district (A.I.S.D.) is one of the lowest rated school districts in Texas – even when rate by their own employees. Don’t send you kids there.

The professionals and family who can afford it, live to the north in Pflugerville (closest to Austin), Georgetown and Round Rock (furthest north from Austin). While the city of Austin borders with
Pflugerville, Pflugerville is still pretty nice.
