I looove chemistry, but I’m really not interested in working in the medical field or anything like that, but I have a passion for beauty! It’s great making money for doing what you like to do! I know I still have a lot of time to look for one, but I’m scared for my future. I’m 15

The list of careers that involve chemistry is long and may even be suprising. I bet you didn’t realize to work developing fireworks you need to be a chemical engineer. To be a secret shopper for some of the fast food restaurants they want you to have a chemistry background since you test the food you buy. Makeup companies hire chemists to develop new skin creams, lipsticks, perfume and everything else that touches your skin. Other areas that employ people with a chemistry background are agriculture, biochemistry, biochemical, forensic chemistry and oil. These are just a few of the options available to you.

You would want to work in Research & Development. Most large companies specialize their chemists into different groups (i.e. powders, skincare, lip cosmetics, nails, eye cosmetics, color emulsions, aerosols, etc.) each group has a unique way of creating the product. Beyond formulating you also have Process development (which is engineering how you are going to manufacture your product) and you also have Quality Control /Quality Assurance, where you maintain the product integrity throughout the whole manufacturing process by analyzing the physical specifications of the product. If you are interested you should look at some of our trade sites.

Cosmetic Chemists have a trade organization called the SCC (Society of Cosmetic Chemists) our main site is in New York, I belong to the California Chapter. You can get a lot of information from those sites.

    Good luck in your studies.
