No Experience Necessary
Question by Sylvia: With a Medical Coding Certification in Illinois how much Salary can I expect in Chicago?
I know that experience plays a part here but I’d like to know more about the best certifications for medical coding jobs in Chicago, IL.
Answer by RN
It depends on the kind of coding certification you have or plan to get. Whether it’s from a local community college in Illinois, one from an online school, or a national qualification.
Two of the best medical coding certifications in Illinois are the CPC from AAPC or CCS-P from AHIMA. While AHIMA is an older organization, AAPC is the largest for coding/billing and also quite popular among health care employers in the State. Both are national organizations and their qualifications similarly accredited.
In Chicago, focus on the CPC medical coding exam. CPC stands for Certified Professional Coder while AAPC stands for American Academy of Professional Coders.
If you have this certification then you can expect your salary to be anywhere from $ 33,000 to $ 47,000 for coding jobs in Illinois (the hourly pay in Chicago is around $ 17/hour). This is comparable to the national salary range for medical billers and coders:
I have seen this trend beyond Chicago as well, in places like Aurora, Rockford, Naperville, Joliet, Springfield, Peoria, Elgin, Waukegan, Cicero, Decatur, Champaign, Evanston, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg and many more.
Remember that CPC is an exam-based credential. You need to pass the CPC exam to get certified.
