Well, in California you are not required to go to school to gain an optician license (b/k/a – Registered Dispensing Optician). To obtain this license, you will need to contact the Medical Board of California (http://www.mbc.ca.gov/allied/rdo_program_rdo.html – the application is on this page). There is a non-refundable registration fee of $ 75 and can only be paid for with a personal check, cashier’s check, or money order. Training is usually on-the-job due to the fact there are only 21 schools accredited to teach Opticianry, and none are in California, as a matter of fact the closest locations to California are in Washington and Nevada – so you get the point. The renewal rate for your license would be less than $ 75, and would have to be completed within 5 years of the current license.
Hope this helps!
