Question by David: Where do people live when they work at San Francisco?
I might get a job offer in San Francisco, CA. I am currently located in Houston, TX and I want to know where does people that has a job in San Francisco normally live? I have done research on cost of living, but I want to know if someone knows a good place to live and NOT expensive.

San Francisco and the surrounding areas have a very very high cost of living. The more affordable areas are either far enough away to make a commute difficult (an hour or more) or are quite unsafe. Coming from Houston, I’m afraid you’ll find everything in the Bay Area quite expensive.

My best suggestions:

1. Either to find a roommate and stay in San Francisco, or
2. Take a look at a BART map and check out the towns on the “end of the lines” of each arm.

Some ideas of safe and relatively less expensive towns:

Walnut Creek
Pleasant Hill
Concord
Union City
Fremont
Castro Valley
Dublin

And some that tend to be expensive:
San Francisco
Berkeley
Orinda
Lafayette

Be careful with Oakland and Berkeley – some areas are beautiful and expensive and others are quite unsafe.

San Francisco Ca is surroundd by the Bay area
most people who live in san francisco live in the bay areathere is south bay north bay
and east bay(no west bay because west is pacific ocean)

some things you should know overall are that housing in the san francisco bay area can get to be pricey.if you are looking for something super cheap the best is a small condo in like oakland or a nice townhouse in like tracy or dublin which are an hour and a half away.

another thing you should know is to completely stay out of the following cities
-Oakland , CA (GANG VIOLENCE , MURDERS ,SHOOTINGS)
    -Richmond ,CA (Sexual assaults robbery,murders)
    -hunters point(all the above)

    Now for your main question

    EAST BAY
    nice cities are…..
    -Albany,CA
    -Berkeley,CA
-Fremont,CA (recommend the most !!) <------ I reccomned eats bay cities each one has 1 or -Emeryville,CA more bart stations(san Frans subway system amazing..great houses with reasonable prices SOUTH BAY and just nice cities (fremont best in my opinion) -Sunnyvale,CA -Mountain view ,CA -Cupertino,CA -Palo Alto ,CA NORTH BAY -Sausalito NOT MUCH......

I would also like to mention Napa, and American Canyon, both have much better housing costs then SF and both are really nice places to live, especially Napa.

  3. barthebear says:

As expensive as SF is, it is cheaper than commuting unless you go all the way to Modesto ( which some do) And that sucks hours out of your day and your life. Live right in SF and you will save time and money. Check the Caltrain and Bart and Golden Gate Ferry rates to see why I wrote this.

  4. Neil says:

Well, a lot if them live in San Francisco. Others live in Marin County, Daly City, Pacifica, Brisbane, Alameda, Oakland, Berkeley, San Leandro, Hayward, Castro Valley, Fremont, Orinda, Moraga, Walnut Creek, El Cerrito, Richmond…

Good place to live and NOT expensive? In Bay Area? I’d say about nowhere.

  5. ? says:

People who work in SF live all over the place. Some live a couple blocks from work. Others commute for hours to get to work. I know people who commute up from San Jose every day or in from the Sacramento area. Others come in via BART from the East Bay or down from Marin. Some people live in San Francisco but the cost is high. I hear Austin, TX is a good place to live and is still affordable 🙂
