Question by evan: What is the probability that an unemployment office or a staffing agency in Columbus, Ohio can find you a job?
So here’s the situation. I am currently an undergraduate student at Ohio State and am looking for a summer job so that costs of attending college during the summer will be lower. I have been in college for one year and have 3 years left. And that I would be willing to accept any – yes, any – job opening at the unemployment office where I would be accepted. No matter what it is.

If I go to an Unemployment Office and also look at temp and/or staffing agencies and tell them that I am looking for any kind of work, what are the chances I will get it?

That is, I tell the workers at the unemployment office and the temp/staffing agencies in Columbus that I will take any job where someone wants be and have no preference. I would be willing to sweep streets, clean buildings, office rooms, clean and/or work in a restaurant or gas station, work directly for the unemployment office or staffing agency, work at any grocery store, collect garbage, drive a bus, work as a house cleaner or a nanny, anything. And work for any wage that my employer would decide on – any wage at all.

If I were to well them this in person, is there any way to gauge the probability that a staffing agency would find me a job and/or that the unemployment agency would find me a job instead of just giving me unemployment benefits?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I would try a temp agency. Here are some places to contact.

I work at such an office, but not in Ohio. My approach is to give people the skills they need to find their own jobs. I teach you what I know about how to complete a resume, and some good websites, as well as how to answer sticky interview questions, the rest is up to you.

Capsule summary: tailor your resume to match the job you are applying for, focus on quality and quantity of work that you do, rather than just list the job duties, remember it is all about what you can do for the employer, and not what they can do for you. Sorry for the run-on sentence. Most employers are looking for strong customer service skills and the ability to help the company make and keep money…safety, confidentiality, regulatory compliance, etc. is great for job searching. If you click the “find resumes” link in the upper left corner, you can see the resumes that other people have posted.

Workforce staff in general has way too many customers to take a real interest in any one customer. Staffing agencies work well for people with strong marketable skills, but not so well with the average person.

    Good luck!!
