Question by Frederick: What is the best cities in Texas where there are jobs, transportation and comfortable places to live?
I am 28 years old and I live in Victorville, California and I am originally from Los Angeles, California. I really want to move to Texas lately. I fell in love with it when I was out there in August/2005 and I fell in love. I like Houston, Dallas, Alamo and San Antonio (which is the city i absolutely love). I need a state with a balance and straightforward economy and culture….

Probably Houston is the best for jobs (but not transport – traffic is really bad there, so it’s better to live very close to work). Also the heat, humidity and mosquitoes are a year-round nuisance…
Dallas area is pretty good for jobs too (supposedly), and the weather is better (hot but drier in summer, and cooler in winter). Traffic moves very nicely and homes are cheap.
Austin has good high tech jobs, but cost of living is highest in Texas.
El Paso – just forget it, from what I hear.
I’d say if you love San Antonio, then try your luck there first.
But I guess most of the good jobs are in the oil and gas industries. Wages for most other jobs are low, in line with the low cost of living in Texas. And god forbid you get injured on the job, or fired, etc., because there is no safety net in Texas (even less than in the rest of America) – it’s sink or swim – social Darwinism at its worst.
Oh, and if you’re coming for the “low taxes”, just be aware that property taxes in Texas are some of the highest in the nation. Auto insurance too, for some reason.
