Question by Bob Marley: Jobs in Portland, Oregon?
How is the job market in Portland Oregon? I am graduating from ASU with a bachelors in Liberal Studies and I plan on going to Portland State University for a master. Me and my fiance will need to find jobs. I am wondering if you guys have any reccomendations. And if the jobs are flowing decently.

It is god-awful. Sorry to be blunt.

Probably far worse than the AZ area, as Oregon has only been better than Michigan in unemployment stats this past year.

You’re going to get that Masters and keep right on waiting tables or sweeping floors, if you can even find those jobs during school. Have something lined up before you move!

I agree that you should try to get something lined up before moving.

The job market throughout the state is tough. Good jobs of all kinds usually have hundreds of applicants and people are getting laid off from jobs that seemed untouchable in the past.

Howver, there are jobs out there, you just need to have a good attitude and work hard. If you look in the paper or on CL, there are places hiring. If you are going to be in Portland on a somewhat temporary basis, you should be able to find something that will allow you to pay rent.

While there are many jobs here, getting the job is the trick, we still have 13% unemployment and all the jobs are low paying so they are getting people who use to make $ 30 per hour to do jobs that pay $ 10 now. Most of the jobs are in the commercial line. Fred Meyer, K-Mart and the fast food chains.
