I have never driven a cab, however, I’ve driven in and talked to a lot of Las Vegas cad drivers. The majority were happy with their jobs and made enough in a least 3 cases to make mortgage payments.

Of course that was before the bottom fell out of the economy.

  1. The Yahoo! Answerer says:

Actually, it does. I have driven for a cab service, and boy, let me tell ya, they pay HORRIBLE!!!

  2. Shep says:

You need to get a taxi permit. You have to pass a test in the cab office before you can even advance to the step of driving a cab.
That is like $ 95. If you pass the test, you have to attend a one day safety and operator courtesy training by the taxi commission. Then you go to your garage and begin to drive.
Plus you have to have a medical test, $ 25. DOT regulations. Forgot, that has to be done before you even go to the taxi commission to take the test. They need to see you are fit.
There are two sides to driving here.
It is a 12 hour day and that stinks. I did it for a few months, but was exhausted, so I left.
If it were an 8 hour day, you can make close to $ 14 an hour. But, by requiring you to be on duty for 12 hours, you have no fares and now you are down to $ 8 an hour.
The majority of the people do not tip well, so do not count on that. Some of the people insult you with a $ 1 tip.
It was an experience and I got out in time. But, it is impossible to make good money in that job. And you pay for the gas to drive you shift. Everyday. So it can get expensive.
