Question by Luciano Alonzo: In the Medical Sales Industry, what is the most lucrative product out there?
I am highly interested in Medical device sales and am wanting to know which is the most lucrative device to sell? I have been recommended Ortho Recon / Trauma and Orthopaedic Biolologics but don’t know if being in the OR interest me very much. Also, does obtaining a RMSR Certicate better than going to Medical Sales College in Colorado?

Just like pharmaceutical sales, a career in medical device sales can be financially rewarding. The problem is everybody is keen to this. This makes the field very competitive, so you have to be at the top of your game to keep from missing out on a job opportunity.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

1
Obtain sales training and experience. You will hardly ever see an opening for an entry-level position that doesn’t require some form of sales experience. While you might expect to receive a lot of on-the-job training, this will be about the product you are selling, not basic sales skills. To keep up with the competition, you must have a proven sales track record. If you don’t have any sales training or experience yet, it’s best to get some before attempting to break into medical device sales.

2
Seek extra sales training. Even if you already have sales experience, if it isn’t in the desired field, it would be beneficial to seek extra training through workshops and seminars. Also check into sales-related classes at local community colleges. If you don’t have as much time on your hands or a less flexible schedule, you may prefer to seek sales training online. One website that offers this is the National Association of Medical Sales Representatives. Its training is specific to medical sales.

3
Prepare a cover letter and resume specific to the job you are applying for. You don’t want your resume to look like just another cookie-cutter copy. Make it stand out from the crowd and highlight the qualifications the employer is looking for. Thoroughly read the job listing so you can include every quality the employer is looking for. Because you may be weaker in some areas, be sure to really emphasize your best attributes and successes.

4
Apply at the top medical device companies. The biggest by 2007 revenue is Thermo Fisher Scientific followed closely by Boston Scientific Corp. Also search job boards such as Careerbuilder and Monster. You might have some success if you apply with every medical device company you can find, but you can almost guarantee success by networking. Engage in social networking and attend business functions to meet people who are already in the medical device sales field. They can do a lot to help you get your foot in the door.

5
Show passion in your interview. According to Brian Krueger, your experience isn’t the most important thing to an employer — it’s your passion for the job. Salesmen who have passion for what they are selling are much better those who just have the necessary education and experience. Be able to discuss how your passion for previous jobs led to success in your industry.
