I’m looking to move to Seattle next summer from Upstate NY. That gives me about a year to save. I’m looking to figure out a good average of how much I should save up.

$ 5,000 would be the minimum I’d recommend. That covers your application fee and deposit for an apartment – groceries and enough to live on until you start your new job. Have a place to live and a job lined up before you get here. The job market is super competitive and rent is expensive – but totally worth it! Best of luck and welcome!

At least 7 or 8 grand. Unless you plan on hitch hiking, your travel costs will be a couple grand by itself. Then you need to pay bills until you find a job and start getting regular income. I wouldn’t go with less the 10k to be honest. Without knowing all the facts this is a hard question to answer. If you plan on renting a room for rent and have no personal items to haul with you then you could probably get by on much less.

But I would save as much as possible. There is nothing worse than being in a city you are not from with no money.
