The US is HUGE!!!!! The cost of living varies greatly depending upon where you live in the US. A 2 bedroom apartment can be found where I live for $ 600/month, but the same apartment would cost $ 6000/month in a nice part of NYC. This also is true for salaries, though not as much. Typical starting salaries for mechanical engineers is around $ 50,000 a year. You can expect the government to take ~30% of that. Be aware though that many US companies do not ‘like’ foreign credentials, and your degree in ME will not be as valuable, as a US degree in ME.

    That will depend hugely on where you live. There will be a vast difference between, what you would get paid in new york and kansas, even with in each state there is going to be a lot of variance, but the cost of living will be very different as well. For example you will get paid a lot more if you live some where like new york city, but you will probably end up paying an out rageous some of money for rent on a tiny apartment. In Kansas you would get paid a lot less, but could probably afford to buy a house with a yard.

    It depends on where you live and who you are working for.

    You say you are interested in Kansas or New York. The cost of living is cheaper in Kansas than in New York.

    As to where should you live, it depends on what types of amenities you want.

    below are a few sites to check out to get you started in your research.

    Good Luck.

    Minneapolis has a great economy, with lots of different industries. The cost of living is much, much lower than New York, LA or Chicago. But there is a lot more to do than in Kansas.

    Minneapolis is in Minnesota, the “midwest” of the country, pretty much the center, top. It does get cold, but you get used to it. Plus Downtown has miles of enclosed skyway.

    Check out Salary.com and try Minneapolis.

    I am a Biology major w 2 years experience, I make about $ 30,000 a year, my Husband makes about $ 70,000 a year as a computer programmer. That puts us in the top 10 percent of income.

    My husband’s brother is going to come here, he doesn’t have many job skills or education, we expect he will be able to make at least $ 20,000. Even “low” jobs like store clerk make a good wage here. Enough to live on.

    An apartment in Minneapolis could range from $ 400 a month to $ 1000 a month. A house could cost as little as $ 900 a month.

    Food if you eat at home is about $ 200-300 per person a month.

    Many people own a car, Payments range from $ 150 to $ 500 a month.

    Gasoline for the car adds another $ 120 a month. If you live downtown you can get a train pass for $ 80 a month, or a buss pass for most of the city for $ 50

    Entertainment can be:
    $ 0 parks and librarys
    $ 7 per person for a movie
    $ 50-100 per person to see a concert

    Our taxes are about 20% of our salary

    You should be able to get medical insurance through your job, for a 1 person it might be $ 50 a month, for a family it could be up to $ 300.
