Democrats still have a majority. They can extend unemployment if they want but they know if they do the tea party groups will use it as ammo against them in the coming elections. The majority of the U.S. does not favor more debt being added.

Only a “christian” nation would persist in referring to the basic need of so many citizens with the fluffy term “benefit”.

    Words matter.
And so does food and shelter.

  2. CarolO says:

The Republicans are filibustering the extension legislation and Democrats can’t get the 60 our of 100 votes necessary to stop them. Therefore, there is nothing being done to extend benefits. That means that when your current level ends, you will no longer be eligible for extentions. If you are in your state’s initial 26 week period, when that ends, so do your benefits. If you are in any of the Federal Tiers, when it ends, so do your benefits. How will you pay your rent or put food on your family’s table? Republicans don’t care. It’s not their problem. I suggest you do what so many of us are doing now — trying to figure out the welfare/food stamp/food banks/free medical clinics systems in our states. We certainly can’t get jobs in this economy, so we’ll have to figure out something else.
