Patient service coordinators and managers plan and oversee healthcare services in hospitals, nursing care centers and private doctors’ offices. They are in charge of the personnel, admissions, medical records and resident care; develop policies and regulations for patient services; and direct daily activities of surgeons, therapists, nurses and physicians. Some of these specialists might be doctors, while others might hold degrees in health information, health services administration, health sciences or public health. Their salaries depend on the employer, scope of duties and geographic location.
The average salary of patient service coordinators in 2009 was $ 90,970 a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Managers in the lowest-paid 10th percentile earned $ 49,750 a year, while the top-earning 10 percent made $ 140,300. The median 50th percentile salary was reported at $ 81,850 a year.
Salary by Employer
The bureau reports that general and medical hospitals in 2009 had 102,780 working patient service coordinators, a little less than half of the overall employment number, making them the largest employers. The average salary there was $ 96,660 a year. Offices of physicians were the distant second-largest employing industry, with 25,370 coordinators and an average annual salary of $ 88,650. Nursing care centers paid $ 77,560 a year. Home health care and outpatient care services had average salaries ranging from $ 83,160 to $ 84,980 a year.
Salary by State
Washington was the highest-paying state for patient service administrators in 2009, according to the bureau, and paid an annual mean wage of $ 109,460 a year. Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Jersey paid anywhere from $ 106,100 to $ 107,020 a year. New York paid an average salary of $ 105,670 and had the second-highest concentration of these specialists per 1,000 workers. The District of Columbia had the top concentration and had an annual average of $ 96,080.
Salary by City
Salinas and San Jose, California, paid the highest annual salaries to patient service coordinators in 2009, $ 132,650 and $ 122,730 a year on average, according to the bureau. Lawrence, Massachusetts, paid an average of $ 121,390. Burlington, Vermont, and Seattle, Washington, had annual salaries ranging from $ 118,750 to $ 119,780. Jackson, Tennessee, the city with the highest concentration of patient service coordinators in the country, however, had an annual mean wage of only $ 69,540.
